🇿🇦🇷🇺🇮🇷 South Africa open to nuclear project bids from Russia or Iran, minister says

South Africa could turn to Russia or Iran to expand its civilian nuclear power capacity, a senior government minister said, a stance analysts say could deepen a rift with the United States and further delay the renewal of a strategic energy pact.

South Africa, which operates Africa's only nuclear power plant, Koeberg, plans to add 2,500 megawatts of new capacity to tackle electricity outages that have plagued the economy and to reduce emissions.

"We can't have a contract that says Iran or Russia must not bid, we can't have that condition," Minister of Mineral and Petroleum Resources Gwede Mantashe, one of the government's leading proponents of expanding nuclear capacity, said.

Pretoria and Washington had been seeking to conclude after almost a decade of talks a new civilian nuclear pact, known as a Section 123 Agreement, a prerequisite for exporting U.S.-made nuclear fuel or equipment.

"The allegations made in the executive order can significantly complicate getting the agreement renewed," said Isabel Bosman, a nuclear energy researcher at the South African Institute of International Affairs.

The previous 123 agreement, implemented in 1997, lapsed in December 2022.

Failure to secure a new deal could block South African power utility Eskom from sourcing reactor fuel from Westinghouse for Unit 1 at Koeberg, industry analysts say. Unit 2 is supplied by France's Framatome.

It may also hinder U.S. companies, such as the Bill Gates-backed TerraPower and ASP Isotopes from investing in South Africa during a global atomic renaissance, the analysts added.

🇺🇸🇿🇦 Four U.S. congressmen have asked President Donald Trump to revoke South Africa’s access to the U.S. market through the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA) as well as consider breaking diplomatic relations, accusing it of undermining American interests globally.

In a letter dated February 11, 2025 Republican congressmen Andrew Ogles, Tom Tiffany, Joe Wilson and Don Bacon said South Africa had a vendetta against Israel, was allegedly committing human rights violations and was friendly with China’s Community Party.

“…we urge you to revoke South Africa’s preference benefits under the African Growth and Opportunity Act,’’ the letter signed by the four congressmen says. “We would also suggest that you consider suspending diplomatic ties unless that government is prepared to engage constructively with our own.”

🇿🇦 Redistribution of land: Racial legislation on its way

The Department of Land Reform and Rural Development today announced to the relevant parliamentary Portfolio Committee that the so-called Equitable Access to Land Bill will be launched this year.

The objective of the Bill is to bring landownership in line with the country’s demographics using race as basis.

The Expropriation Act, which President Cyril Ramaphosa signed into law earlier this year, is mentioned in the same breath as the proposed Bill as a mechanism whereby government could gain access to land.

Neither the Department nor the Portfolio Committee has tried to hide the fact that this Bill is aimed at white landownership.

🇺🇸🇿🇦 Trump Vindicated as South Africa Considers Bill to Redistribute Land on Racial Lines

President Donald Trump’s concerns about South Africa’s recent legislation on expropriation were vindicated Wednesday when news emerged of new legislation to allow land to be redistributed along racial lines.

The Freedom Front Plus, a small right-wing party in the South African parliament that represents a primarily Afrikaans-speaking constituency, warned that the new proposal would seek to bring land ownership patterns — currently dominated by whites — into line with the demographic reality of a black majority in South Africa.

📝 Orania's Joost Strydom:

Negotiations in the 90’s between the previous government and the ANC were based on two basic foundational agreements: Afrikaners can keep land that were their property, and Afrikaners can have their own educational institutions and schools.

In the past few months both these agreements fell victim to the ANC’s dishonesty.

If some Afrikaners want to leave SA, I completely understand and, though saddened, wish them well.

Orania however is suggesting a new dispensation.

Territory for Afrikaners should be recognised.

Without a dispensational change, the ANC will continue to vilify Afrikaners in order to cover up their own failures and satisfy their voter base.

Recognizing a territory for Afrikaners will be stabilising for the region, in the interest of peace, and a net positive for everyone.

What we ask, we also extend to others that can maintain the same.

Be solution driven.

Be like Orania

Theo de Jager erased from Department of Agriculture press photo

In a Stalinesque move, the department edited a press photo to erase the biggest representative of South African farmers after his criticism of race-based expropriation

Theo de Jager has been outspoken about the stance of the government regarding land expropriation, race-based and otherwise, and as head of SAAI, represents the largest number of individual farmers in the country.

Land grabbers move onto East London farm

More than 1,000 people have invaded a farm alongside the N2, between East London and Qonce, in a bid to each grab a parcel of land.

Although the owner of Claremont Farm, Bruce Page, has approached the courts to stop the invasion, as of Monday more than 700 plots had been marked off.

📝 Theo de Jager: Senior government officials and local politicians are facilitators and beneficiaries, selling stands for R15000 - R25000 [$800 - $1400]

The farm owners struggle to get the authorities to act because many officials have vested interests.

🇿🇦 🤝 🇺🇸 Delegation from AfriForum, Solidariteit and the Solidarity Movement have met with senior representatives of the Trump administration at the White House in Washington, DC.

🔶️ The Solidarity Movement’s delegation was led by the chairperson of the Solidarity Movement Flip Buys, and included Kallie Kriel, AfriForum CEO, Dr Dirk Hermann, Solidarity CEO, and Jaco Kleynhans, Head of International Liaison at the Solidarity Movement.

🔶️ During this historic meeting, the delegation expressed its gratitude to the Trump administration for highlighting the human rights violations against Afrikaners, and the ANC's reckless policies and poor governance of the country. The Solidarity Movement is grateful for Trump's willingness to provide assistance to Afrikaners, as well.

🔶️ The delegation also handed over a memorandum to the Trump administration during the meeting. This memorandum indicates that the interests of South Africa's citisens, including Afrikaners, can best be promoted through intensified pressure on ANC leaders for pushing radical policies, rather than ending South Africa's participation in AGOA or punishing the country as a whole.

🔶️ The delegation further expressed serious concerns about the consequences of the Expropriation Act, racial laws, calls for violence against Afrikaners and attacks on Afrikaans schools such as the BELA Act.

🔶️ During the meeting, Dr Hermann handed over a report, which highlights the wide scope of discriminatory racial legislation in South Africa.

🔶️ "The current diplomatic crisis was caused by the ANC. This is not just a minor diplomatic misunderstanding," according to Dr Hermann.

🇿🇦🇺🇸 South African President Ramaphosa Attacks Trump, Vows to Arrest Netanyahu

South African President Cyril Ramaphosa attacked U.S. President Donald Trump on Tuesday in an article in which he criticized the U.S. for its sanctions on the International Criminal Court (ICC), and also viciously attacked Israel.

The article comes less than two weeks after Trump issued an executive order in which he cut off aid to South Africa, and offered asylum to Afrikaner farmers, listing among the reasons: the fact that “South Africa has taken aggressive positions towards the United States and its allies, including accusing Israel, not Hamas, of genocide in the International Court of Justice.”

Ramaphosa’s article is a direct violation of South Africa’s obligations under the Africa Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA), a trade deal under which the U.S. gives preferential access to its markets to certain African countries.

Ramaphosa appears to have decided on confrontation with Trump, rather than compromise.
